What type of cars can be imported to Australia...
Car Over 25 Years Old
For Australia any car more than 25 years old can be imported. You can import a vehicle made before this date, which many car enthusiasts will use to import classic cars, older Japanese imports and more.
Personal Imports
This applies to those moving to Australia who want to bring their cars with them. You must have owned the vehicle for 12 months, it must've been garaged at a location close to your home and you must have held a valid driver's licence in the country.
Cars exported from Australia but re-imported
If you exported a car from Australia, for example, for an extended overseas trip, you can bring it back into Australia under this option.
Cars not available in Australia
As part of the Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme (SEVS) you can import vehicles not officially sold here. Each car is subject to approval and must be listed on the SEVS Register
Some Frequently Asked Questions...
How much does it cost to import a vehicle?
Shipping a car into Australia can be accomplished through two primary methods: Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) sea freight and container shipping.
With the RoRo method, vehicles are directly driven and securely parked on a ship. In contrast, container shipping involves placing the car safely within a shipping container which is then loaded onto the vessel. Shipping costs for RoRo start from approximately $3000 when originating from Asia and can exceed $5000 from Europe.
Opting for container shipping, on the other hand, can be twice as expensive as the RoRo method.
Can I import any left-hand drive car?
Am I Subject to GST, Duty, and Luxury Car Tax When Importing a Vehicle?
If the vehicle originates from a country with a free trade agreement with Australia – like Japan – your imported vehicle is only taxed 10% (GST).
If the vehicle comes from Europe, there is half a chance you’ll be paying 20% instead (10% duty and 10% GST).
Also be aware that your vehicle duty and GST bill is calculated on the cost of the vehicle combined with the cost of shipping.
If the cost of the vehicle and its shipping exceeds the current Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold of $71,849, then your imported vehicle will also be taxed 33 per cent on first registration.
Can I import a car from any country?
At the moment, you can import a car from any country.
How long does it take to import a vehicle?
Expect the process of buying, importing and road-registering an imported vehicle to take around 16 weeks (or four months).
One of the challenges for car import shipping currently is the unpredictability at Australian ports. As the numbers of imported new and used vehicles surge, combined with several quarantine challenges faced by local customs, the wait times at these ports have become increasingly volatile.
The speed would be quicker if you choose to import a vehicle at a less busy port (Like Fremantle, Perth).
